New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston didn’t expect to be starting in Week 12 against the Detroit Lions — but after Jaxson Dart was ruled out with a concussion, the veteran signal-caller is stepping in with full confidence.

Winston revealed he only learned on Friday that he would be the starter, as most expected Dart to clear concussion protocol after taking the majority of first-team reps throughout the week.

“I just found out,” Winston told reporters. “I just knew I had to be ready. Whatever is required for me to be ready, I’m ready for it.”

Dart will now miss his second straight game following the concussion he suffered in the Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Winston, an 11-year NFL veteran, said he prepares every week as if he’s the starter — part of the reality of life as a quarterback in the league.

“This is the life of being an NFL quarterback. Staying ready so you don’t have to get ready,” he said.

Winston made his Giants debut last week, completing 10 of 29 passes for 201 yards with an interception and a last-play fumble in a 27–20 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Still, the Giants’ interim head coach Mike Kafka expressed full confidence in Winston’s readiness.

“Our guys prep. They put the work in,” Kafka said. “So, no surprise to me that Jameis is ready to go. I have full confidence in him.”

Winston also noted that rookie Jaxson Dart looked strong in practice despite ultimately being ruled out.

“He’s a young superstar,” Winston said. “I know he’s going to be ready to go.”

As the Giants continue to search for their first road win and first victory in weeks, Winston is encouraged by the possible return of receiver Darius Slayton, and by the fast impact made by newcomer Isaiah Hodgins.

“These guys are excited,” Winston said. “Our focus is on how we can beat the Detroit Lions.”

With Winston now set to lead the Giants in Detroit, the team hopes the unexpected change at quarterback can spark a much-needed turnaround.
