Grading Detroit Lions’ Aggressive trade up + selection of WR Isaac TeSlaa

The Detroit Lions made another bold move in the 2025 NFL Draft, trading up 32 spots to grab Arkansas wideout Isaac TeSlaa. It was their second aggressive trade of the night, following an earlier move for offensive lineman Tate Ratledge. But while Holmes and the front office clearly have a type and are sticking to their draft board, this one came at a steep price.

TeSlaa is a name familiar to Michigan football fans. He first made a name for himself at Hillsdale College before transferring to Arkansas, where he played two seasons and tallied 896 receiving yards and five touchdowns across 25 games, starting 17. At 6’4″, 215 pounds, TeSlaa fits the mold of a big-bodied boundary receiver—think Tim Patrick, but with more upside. In 2024, he averaged an impressive 19.5 yards per catch, flashing big-play potential.

It’s easy to see the Lions’ logic here. Tim Patrick was a solid contributor in 2024 and is returning on a low-cost, one-year deal. But at age 31 with a history of injuries, Detroit likely views him as a stopgap. TeSlaa could be groomed as a long-term replacement on the outside, and he’ll have the benefit of developing behind Patrick without immediate pressure to start.

Where things get tricky is the cost. The Lions gave up the final pick in the third round (No. 102) along with both of their third-round picks next year. In return, they got No. 70 overall and a pair of sixth-rounders. By most trade value charts, it’s not a complete fleecing—but it’s still a hefty investment for a developmental receiver with limited top-tier college experience.

On the positive side, TeSlaa stood out at the Senior Bowl, which often signals untapped potential. And if there’s a front office that’s earned some trust in identifying under-the-radar talent, it’s Brad Holmes and company.

Still, even with a clear long-term vision and faith in the Lions’ scouting, the cost makes this move feel uncomfortable. It’s hard to justify giving up three third-rounders—especially for a player who may not significantly contribute until 2026.
