The Memphis Grizzlies and the Milwaukee Bucks nearly completed a trade.

According to Shams Charania, Memphis explored trading Ja Morant to the Milwaukee Bucks prior to the deadline. Jake Fisher supported this, stating that clubs across the league feel Milwaukee’s interest is legitimate. Furthermore, Michael Scotto’s previous reporting indicated that Memphis desired Rollins in the transaction.

The Dealbreaker: Ryan Rollins

It sounds ridiculous at first. A trade for Ja Morant, an All-Star-caliber player and a franchise-level talent, falls through due to Ryan Rollins? But once you zoom out, it actually makes a lot of sense. Ja Morant’s trade value is now at an all-time low. Morant’s availability for the previous three seasons has been quite worrisome. Ja Morant is only 26 years old, and a change of environment may help him flourish.

Pairing Ja with Giannis might be extremely intriguing, but Ja’s performance does not justify his existing deal. Ryan Rollins, on the other hand, has a fantastic team-friendly deal.

Ryan Rollins, 23, is having a breakthrough season. He’s scoring over 17 points and averaging 5. 6 assists per game, while shooting approximately 41% from three. He’s stepped into a full-time starting position and hasn’t seemed out of place. That combination, young, productive, and affordable, is precisely what clubs seek right now.

Why Milwaukee Said No to Morant

The Bucks’ decision comes down to where they are as a squad.

They’ve already gone all-in on creating a team around Giannis Antetokounmpo. They’ve traded picks, sacrificed depth, and put all their bets on the table. However, the outcomes have not completely satisfied expectations, and there is some skepticism about the future. In that case, you do not give away one of your finest young prospects, especially not for a player with so many concerns as Morant.

What This Means for Memphis.

This suggests that Ja Morant’s time in Memphis may be coming to an end this summer. Teams do not just stroll around looking for their franchise player. Even having these talks indicates that the Grizzlies are wondering what their future would look like without Morant as the centerpiece.

And what they most likely realized is that his value is not what it formerly was. This scenario reveals a lot about Morant, the Grizzlies, and how the rest of the league perceives both right now.
