A potentially severe leg injury to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones could indirectly reshape the Detroit Lions’ postseason chances.
Detroit, coached by Dan Campbell, is currently just outside the NFC playoff picture. To stay alive in the race, the Lions are widely expected to need at least three wins in their final four games — and possibly a perfect finish.
The Colts’ upcoming schedule could play a major role. Indianapolis is set to face two teams currently ahead of Detroit in the standings: the Seattle Seahawks (9-3) and the San Francisco 49ers (9-4).
As reported by Colts On SI, Jones went down with what turned out to be an injury unrelated to his healing fibula. Instead, the damage occurred to his other leg. He attempted to get back up before collapsing again and angrily slamming his helmet. Later updates confirmed the worst outcome: Jones would not return to the pivotal matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even more concerning, the injury was non-contact and involved the Achilles tendon in the leg opposite the one with the fractured fibula.
Meanwhile, the Lions prepare for a road game against the Los Angeles Rams, who face the Arizona Cardinals this week.
Veteran Tackle Seeks Insight From Former Teammate
Left tackle Taylor Decker recently shared that he sought advice from former Lions tight end Zach Ertz during the offseason regarding his career and the upcoming OTAs. Ertz spent a short period with Detroit in 2024.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Ertz reminded Decker not to frame football as an obligation but as something he chooses because he enjoys it. Decker recalled Ertz telling him that he could have stopped playing years ago if he truly wanted to and that he shouldn’t convince himself he’s forced to keep going.
Decker explained that while his family would likely prefer he step away — out of concern for his long-term well-being — they can’t fully understand what it’s like to spend a lifetime in the sport and inside a locker room. For him, that sense of belonging is irreplaceable once a career ends.
