“I Want The Smoke” Chicago Bears' Ben Johnson Sends Strong 4-Word Warning to Dan Campbell and Detroit Lions as NFC North Rivals

Ben Johnson is wasting no time making an impression in his new role as head coach of the Chicago Bears. Even before the Bears began their offseason workouts, Johnson was already stirring attention. As reported by The New York Times, Chicago chairman George McCaskey shared that Johnson is fired up to face some familiar faces in the NFC North — his former colleagues Dan Campbell, Kevin O’Connell, and Matt LaFleur — when the 2025 NFL season kicks off.

Before taking over in Chicago, Johnson served as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2022 to 2024. He joined the Lions in 2019 and steadily worked his way up, earning a deep understanding of the organization. Prior to his time in Detroit, Johnson held multiple coaching roles with the Miami Dolphins.

“He told me, ‘I want that smoke,’” McCaskey revealed, highlighting Johnson’s eagerness to compete with his former mentors and rivals.

Johnson steps into a Bears organization desperate for a fresh start after a rough 2024 campaign. The team wrapped up the season in last place in the NFC North, ending with a 6-11 record. Their final outing was a narrow 24-22 win over Green Bay, but the victory did little to salvage what had already become a lost season.

Caleb Williams Faces a Tough Test Under New Leadership

While Johnson’s goal is clearly to transform the Bears into contenders, it won’t be smooth sailing for everyone on the roster — especially rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. NFL insider Ian Rapoport has suggested that Johnson isn’t planning to take it easy on the young signal-caller. Instead, Williams is expected to be tested from the start.

During his time with Detroit, Johnson built one of the league’s most dynamic offenses. The Lions stormed to a 15-2 record in 2024 and topped the NFC North. That success speaks volumes about Johnson’s ability to bring out the best in his players — but also about the high expectations he brings with him.

Johnson’s approach stands in stark contrast to that of his predecessor, Matt Eberflus. He demands quick results and doesn’t hesitate to push his team hard from day one. Williams, who tallied 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 2024, will have to adjust quickly. But if he embraces the challenge, he could unlock even greater potential under Johnson’s guidance.
