Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire built the Red Raiders into a national powerhouse last season, securing a highly desired berth in the College Football Playoff’s 12-team field. In addition, McGuire guided the Red Raiders to the Big 12 championship, their first clear conference title since 1955.

Going into his fifth season in command of the program, McGuire recruited the No. 2 transfer portal class, trailing only the reigning national champions, the Indiana Hoosiers, as he attempts to transform the Red Raiders into regular contenders.

Why Texas Tech Coach Joey McGuire Reaffirmed His Commitment to the Red Raiders

During an appearance on Wednesday’s edition of the “Jim Rome Show,” McGuire explained why he had not been associated with a departure from Lubbock during the height of the fast and furious coaching carousel that engulfed college football last year.

“That’s why you never heard my name,” McGuire explained. “My guys that represent me, they know “do not put my name out there,” and that’s how most coaches get their name out there, their agents are putting it out there. ” I told my team, “My name should never be mentioned in any job,” because I have the greatest job in the country.

“There is no institution more aligned in terms of athletics and what they are attempting to do in all of their programs. “I work for the top AD in the country,” I said.

After concluding the regular season with an impressive 11-1 record, the Red Raiders rewarded outspoken coach McGuire with a seven-year contract extension through 2032. Under the terms of his contract, which is worth $51. 9 million without incentives, his compensation will exceed $7 million per year by the end of the agreement.

McGuire began his coaching career at Crowley High School before transferring to Cedar Hill High School, where he transformed the school into heavyweight competitors before joining Baylor as tight ends coach in 2017. He worked as the Bears’ associate head coach and defensive ends coach under coach Matt Rhule in 2019 before moving to outside linebackers coach under Dave Aranda in 2020.

He was named the Red Raiders’ head coach in 2021, and he guided them to an 8-5 record and their first winning conference season in 13 years. With billionaire donor Cody Campbell’s assistance, McGuire recruited the nation’s No. 1 transfer portal class in 2025, transforming the Red Raiders into a national championship contender.

McGuire has a 35-18 record in four seasons in Lubbock, including four consecutive bowl appearances, a feat last accomplished by the famous Mike Leach.
