Kentucky Football Expands Staff with Key Additions, Including Former
Kentucky football is continuing to strengthen its coaching staff with a blend of fresh faces and experienced veterans. Head coach Mark Stoops has officially announced the hiring of three new staff members to help shape the team for the 2025 season:
Paul Rodriguez – A former Kentucky offensive tackle, now stepping into a graduate assistant role.
Brad Lambert – The former head coach at Charlotte, now joining as a defensive analyst focusing on the nickelbacks.
Kevin Barbay – The ex-offensive coordinator at Houston, now joining as an offensive analyst.
These new hires bring a mix of youthful energy, leadership experience, and offensive innovation to the program, each contributing unique skills that will support Kentucky’s development moving forward.
Paul Rodriguez: A Familiar Face Returns
For Paul Rodriguez, joining the coaching staff marks a return to his roots. A former offensive tackle for the Wildcats, Rodriguez had to medically retire from playing but stayed involved with the team. Now, as a graduate assistant, he will work closely with the offensive line, offering his experience and deep understanding of Kentucky’s offensive system. His return to the program brings both passion and familiarity, enhancing the coaching staff’s connection to the team’s culture and philosophy.
Brad Lambert: Veteran Defensive Coach with Head Coaching Experience
Brad Lambert brings decades of defensive expertise to Kentucky’s staff. Having served as the head coach at Charlotte from 2011-2018, Lambert joins as a defensive analyst, focusing on the development of the nickelbacks. Lambert’s career includes stints at several prestigious programs, such as Wake Forest, Georgia, Marshall, and Purdue. Most recently, he was the defensive coordinator at Wake Forest before being let go due to a coaching change. His wealth of experience in defensive strategy and player development makes him a valuable asset to Kentucky as the team prepares for next season.
Kevin Barbay: A Seasoned Offensive Coach with Broad Experience
Kevin Barbay, now Kentucky’s new offensive analyst, brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the program. Barbay was previously the offensive coordinator at Houston but was dismissed after a single season. Throughout his career, he has held significant roles at several universities, including Florida, Central Michigan (as Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator), Appalachian State (Offensive Coordinator), and Mississippi State (Offensive Coordinator). With expertise in coaching quarterbacks, wide receivers, and special teams, Barbay offers versatility and a strong offensive background. In his new role, he will work behind the scenes to analyze film, assist in game planning, and help with player development.
Kentucky Strengthens Its Coaching Staff for 2025
These recent hires mark a continued effort by Mark Stoops to enhance Kentucky’s football program. Rodriguez’s return provides a link to the past and a deep commitment to the team. Lambert’s extensive defensive knowledge will aid in the development of Kentucky’s secondary, while Barbay’s offensive creativity will assist in refining game strategies and player growth. As spring practice progresses, these new staff members will play a crucial role in shaping the Wildcats’ approach to the 2025 season.
