Kentucky Adds Veteran RB Seth McGowan from Transfer Portal

The Kentucky Wildcats have bolstered their running back depth with the addition of Seth McGowan, a dynamic and seasoned runner who brings both power and playmaking ability to the roster.

McGowan, who most recently starred at New Mexico State, announced his commitment to Kentucky after entering the transfer portal. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound back is known for his physical running style and breakaway speed — tools that will be valuable for a Kentucky squad that was in need of depth at the position following spring practices.

A native of Mesquite, Texas, McGowan began his collegiate career at Oklahoma in 2020, where he totaled 370 rushing yards and four touchdowns as a freshman in the Big 12. He was recruited to the Sooners by Jay Boulware, who now coaches the running backs at Kentucky.

However, McGowan’s path hasn’t been straightforward. After his time at Oklahoma was cut short due to legal issues stemming from an armed robbery investigation — resulting in a larceny conviction and probation — he stepped away from Division I football. He returned to the field at Texas College (NAIA) in 2022 and spent the following season at Butler Community College before landing at New Mexico State.

In 2024, McGowan delivered a strong comeback campaign, rushing for 813 yards at a clip of 5.3 yards per carry while adding 23 receptions. His performance highlighted his all-around ability and reaffirmed his status as a top-tier back.

Notably, McGowan reunites with former New Mexico State teammate Shiyazh Pete, an offensive lineman who also transferred to Kentucky this offseason. That familiarity, along with his ties to Boulware, could ease McGowan’s transition to the SEC.

With only four scholarship backs coming out of spring camp, Kentucky’s addition of McGowan is both strategic and impactful. His mix of experience, talent, and resilience could make him a key contributor in the Wildcats’ offense this fall — and give him a chance to rewrite his story on one of college football’s biggest stages.
