Chris Lewis, Former Kentucky and Troy Wide Receiver, Announces Medical Retirement After Beating Cancer
After a courageous battle with cancer, Chris Lewis has announced his medical retirement from football, closing the chapter on a promising athletic career. In a personal message shared on social media Monday, Lewis revealed that doctors have advised him to step away from the sport due to health concerns.
Lewis, who began his collegiate career at the University of Kentucky, transferred to Troy University after former UK assistant Jon Sumrall took the head coaching role there. The move proved fruitful, as Lewis quickly became a key offensive weapon. In the 2023 season, he tallied 735 receiving yards and scored 10 touchdowns, earning national recognition for his performance.
However, following the season, Lewis began experiencing pain in his left leg. Medical tests revealed a serious diagnosis: osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer located in his femur. He endured a grueling treatment regimen, including 10 weeks of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor, and another 10 weeks of post-op chemotherapy.
By September 2024, Lewis shared the uplifting news that he was officially cancer-free. He celebrated this victory publicly while continuing to raise funds through a GoFundMe campaign to help manage the high costs of his medical care.
Although he overcame cancer, doctors have since determined that continuing to play football could pose further health risks. In his statement, Lewis reflected on the unexpected end of his playing days.
“I’m incredibly thankful when I think about the path I’ve taken,” Lewis wrote. “Playing at Troy University was a dream come true. Things changed drastically in December 2023, and while this isn’t the ending I had hoped for, I have faith in the journey ahead.”
Chris Lewis’ story is one of resilience and determination, and though he won’t return to the gridiron, his courage in facing adversity will continue to leave a lasting impression.
