Hardley Gilmore Returns to Kentucky, Earning Praise from Bush Hamdan Ahead of Sophomore Season

Wide receiver Hardley Gilmore has had an eventful offseason that reflects the ever-changing landscape of college football rosters.

After suiting up for Kentucky last season, Gilmore briefly transferred to Nebraska during the spring. However, his time with the Cornhuskers was short-lived — just two weeks — before he made the decision to return to Lexington this summer.

Speaking during Kentucky’s recent media day, Gilmore shared his reasons for coming back to the Wildcats.

“There’s something real about this place. Everyone here is sincere. Kentucky isn’t just a football team to me — it’s home,” Gilmore said. “I’ve been here since I was 16, and it feels like family.”

Gilmore explained that his initial decision to leave Kentucky was largely influenced by former wide receivers coach Daikiel Shorts. After being recruited by then-offensive coordinator Liam Coen, Gilmore developed a strong connection with Shorts following Coen’s departure. So when Shorts accepted a role at Nebraska, he invited Gilmore to follow — and he did.

“It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment choice,” Gilmore said. “But once I got there, I realized it wasn’t the right fit. So I came back.”

As a true freshman last season, Gilmore dealt with a collarbone injury but still managed to haul in six receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown. Now entering his second year, he’ll be expected to take on a bigger role, especially with the departures of top receivers Barion Brown and Dane Key.

New offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan is optimistic about Gilmore’s potential.

“Hardley’s got real talent,” Hamdan said. “It’s all going to depend on how locked in he is. He has to realize football goes beyond just game days. If he commits to that, there’s no ceiling on what he can do.”

All eyes will be on Gilmore as he looks to elevate his game and become a key piece of Kentucky’s offense in the 2025 season.
