Recruiting insiders believe that Kentucky is on the verge of adding a highly sought-after transfer to its roster. According to two of the most respected names in college basketball recruiting, the Wildcats are in prime position to land San Diego State forward Magoon Gwath.

Gwath, a 7-foot, 205-pound forward, was among the first transfer portal prospects Kentucky reached out to when he became available. Now, 247 Sports’ recruiting expert Travis Branham has logged a prediction favoring Kentucky as the likely destination for Gwath.

Following Branham’s lead, On3’s Joe Tipton has also projected the Wildcats to come out on top in the race for his commitment. While Michigan has been another strong contender, recent developments suggest that Kentucky may be closing in on a deal to bring the talented big man to Lexington.

Originally an unranked member of the 2023 recruiting class, Gwath redshirted his freshman season at San Diego State. His time on the sidelines was partly due to a foot injury, but he was still able to develop his game in practice alongside former Aztecs standout Lamont Butler, who coincidentally transferred to Kentucky earlier this offseason.

When he finally took the court in the 2024-25 season, Gwath quickly made an impact, proving himself as a key player for the Aztecs. He started all 26 games he played in, averaging 8.5 points per game while shooting an impressive 50.6% from the field.

He also showcased his ability to stretch the floor, connecting on 37.8% of his 3-point attempts (1.7 attempts per game). Defensively, he was a major presence in the paint, contributing 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. However, he did miss five games due to a hyperextended knee.

If Gwath does commit to Kentucky, he will join a Wildcats squad that has already secured three promising high school recruits: Malachi Moreno, Acaden Lewis, and Jasper Johnson.

The program has also added Tulane guard Kam Williams as its first transfer portal acquisition. Adding a player like Gwath, who brings size, defensive ability, and developing offensive versatility, would be a significant boost to Kentucky’s frontcourt as they look to reload for the upcoming season.

With two of the most trusted recruiting analysts backing Kentucky as the favorite, all signs indicate that the Wildcats are well on their way to securing another key piece for their roster. If everything falls into place, Gwath could play a vital role in Kentucky’s pursuit of success next season.
