The Basketball Tournament (TBT) delivered fireworks over the weekend as Kentucky’s alumni squad, La Familia, pulled off a thrilling 80–76 victory over Auburn’s War Ready. The win pushes La Familia into the Sweet 16 and sets them up to host all remaining Lexington Regional games—thanks in part to Louisville’s alumni team, The Ville, falling in their bracket.
Sunday’s matchup between La Familia and War Ready was packed with drama. La Familia led 44–36 at halftime and seemed in control before War Ready mounted a second-half surge. Tensions ran high, resulting in seven technical fouls throughout the game. But the turning point came during the Elam Ending, when former Kentucky standout Archie Goodwin sealed the win with a clutch layup off a steal by Kahlil Whitney.
Goodwin, one of the stars of the game, finished with 16 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds. His leadership and late-game poise proved critical in fending off War Ready’s comeback attempt. La Familia also got strong contributions from Whitney, who provided energy on both ends, and Doron Lamb, who chipped in with timely buckets and experience.
While Kentucky’s squad celebrated, their in-state rivals had a different fate. The Ville, composed of former Louisville Cardinals, suffered a 73–63 defeat to Sideline Cancer, ending their run in the tournament. The Ville struggled offensively, especially from beyond the arc, and couldn’t recover from a 21-point deficit despite a late push.
The implications of The Ville’s loss were immediate. La Familia now stands atop the Home Court Advantage standings for the Lexington Regional. That means all remaining rounds La Familia plays—including the Sweet 16—will take place at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, giving them a significant crowd and travel advantage.
Up next for La Familia is a Tuesday night clash with Eberlein Drive, a tough veteran squad featuring former TBT stars. Ironically, Archie Goodwin previously played for Eberlein Drive, adding even more intrigue to the matchup. The game tips off at 6 PM ET and will be broadcast on FS2.
With momentum on their side, a clear path to the Elite Eight, and Kentucky fans rallying behind them, La Familia is quickly becoming one of the tournament’s top contenders. A win on Tuesday could be another step toward their ultimate goal: a shot at the $1 million grand prize.
