Former Leeds Rhinos head coach Richard Agar has been accused of grabbing a UK journalist by the throat at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas during the weekend. The alleged incident took place at half-time during the New Zealand Warriors’ 30-8 loss to the Canberra Raiders, where Agar currently serves as an assistant coach under Andrew Webster.
Agar, who joined the New Zealand-based club in 2023, was making his way through the press box to access the lifts leading to the dressing room area. According to multiple Australian media reports, he allegedly grabbed the journalist by the throat and verbally abused him in front of several witnesses.
The journalist, who has chosen to remain anonymous, is reportedly preparing to file a complaint with the NRL regarding the altercation. The league is expected to review CCTV footage from the stadium and interview at least one witness to verify the claims. If the allegations are substantiated, Agar could face disciplinary action from both the Warriors and the NRL.
Warriors CEO Cameron George has acknowledged the incident but remained cautious in his response. “I’ll speak to Richard and I’ll speak to the NRL to find out exactly what happened and we’ll take it from there,” George said.
The incident has raised concerns about professionalism and conduct within the sport, particularly in high-pressure environments such as game days. While the full details are still emerging, the NRL will likely take the matter seriously, as any confirmed physical altercation involving a coach would be considered a serious breach of professional standards.
As investigations continue, Agar and the Warriors are expected to address the allegations further, with potential consequences depending on the league’s findings.
