Lions GM Explains Why Za’Darius Smith Was Released (And It’s a Disappointing bombshell Reason)

At the NFL Owners Meetings, Lions GM Brad Holmes addressed Smith’s release, but his explanation may frustrate many Lions fans. Holmes stated that the team parted ways with Smith for financial reasons.

“We simply couldn’t make it work financially,” Holmes explained. “That was the bottom line, and I communicated that to him, and he understood the situation.” He further added, “While he made plays for us and contributed during his time here, we just weren’t in a position to retain him at his salary. We’re in touch with his agent, and he knows where we stand.”

By releasing Smith, the Lions gained $5.7 million in cap savings for 2025 and $5.2 million for 2026. Although that extra space could benefit the team in the future, it raises questions about why the Lions felt the need to cut Smith loose, especially when they aren’t in desperate need of cap space. According to Overthecap.com, the Lions currently have $42.9 million in cap room. Given this, retaining Smith could have been easily manageable, providing them with another reliable pass rusher.

During his eight games with Detroit, Smith registered 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, and four sacks—solid contributions for a defense dealing with numerous injuries. Given their cap situation, the decision to part ways with him after such a short stint seems puzzling.

It’s clear that Holmes may have a bigger plan in mind, but at the expense of a player who proved his value.
