Before being promoted to the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator, David Blough had attracted interest from other clubs. If he hadn’t landed in burgundy and gold, a move to the Midwest was a strong possibility.

At the NFL Scout Combine, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell stated that the team was aiming for Blough, making Dan Quinn’s decision to move swiftly and name him offensive coordinator particularly astute.

“I love Blough,” says Campbell. “I mean, he was one of the guys I wanted to bring in. You know, Coach Quinn and the other guys went ahead and named him OC, which was a good move on their part. ”

A Young Coach On The Rise.

Campbell described Blough as a promising new coach in the league. Having worked closely with him, Campbell stated that his assessment of Blough’s abilities is based on firsthand experience rather than guesswork. If you recall, Blough previously played quarterback for the Detroit Lions under head coach Dan Campbell from 2021 through the 2023 season, spending time on both the practice squad and the active roster during that time.

“I think Blough is a young, emerging coach in this league,” he remarked. “I’ve been around him firsthand, and, uh, he’s another one that’s sharp. “

Campbell believes Blough has a solid grasp on the game and adapts quickly. That level of awareness is critical for an offensive coordinator, especially one who is taking on a leadership position.

Strong understanding of offense.

According to Campbell, Blough has a good understanding of how offenses function. He comprehends quarterback play and the rushing game, both essential elements for building a successful offense.

“He understands football and quarterback play,” Campbell said. “He understands the running game. “

That combination allows a coach to see the entire picture and make game plan changes as needed. Campbell also stated that Blough pays meticulous attention to detail, which can make a significant impact in games and throughout the season.

Competitive and prepared

Campbell also commended Blough’s competitiveness, describing it as one of his greatest characteristics.

“He’s competitive. Extremely competitive,” Campbell remarked.

Campbell believes Blough will excel in his new post because to that attitude, as well as his grasp of the game.

“I believe he’s going to do a fantastic job,” he remarked.

Dan Quinn’s choice to move fast and name Blough offensive coordinator may prove to be a crucial step for his coaching team as they attempt to recover this season.
