The Detroit Lions were back on the practice field Wednesday as preparations ramped up for their crucial Week 2 divisional matchup against the Chicago Bears. However, the absence of two major contributors — left tackle Taylor Decker and linebacker Jack Campbell — quickly became the focal point of the day.

According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network, neither Decker nor Campbell was present during the media-access portion of practice. Their absences immediately raised questions about their availability for Sunday, as both players are integral to the Lions’ game plan on opposite sides of the ball.

There was some positive news on the health front. Safety Sione Vaki and linebacker Trevor Nowaske were back in pads after being sidelined, giving Detroit a bit of depth reinforcement. In addition, rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, who left last week’s season opener against Green Bay with a groin injury, returned to practice. His availability will be important for a secondary that was tested heavily in Week 1.

The bigger concern remains Detroit’s depth chart, particularly in the offensive trenches and at linebacker. Decker, the Lions’ most experienced lineman, is not only a leader in the locker room but also the anchor of the offensive line tasked with protecting quarterback Jared Goff. His potential absence could create challenges against a Bears pass rush looking to redeem itself after a shaky showing in Week 1.

Meanwhile, Campbell is coming off a strong 2024 season in which he led the team in tackles. His ability to diagnose plays and provide consistency in the middle of the defense makes him one of the most important pieces of coordinator Aaron Glenn’s unit. Losing Campbell would force younger, less experienced players to step into bigger roles against a Bears offense eager to establish balance after a rough start.

As the week progresses, the Lions’ medical staff will continue to evaluate Decker and Campbell. Their statuses will be closely monitored, with final designations expected by the time Detroit releases its official injury report later this week.
