Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs contract outlook aligns with Detroit’s recent billion-dollar spending pattern

Lately, the Detroit Lions have shown a clear philosophy: when a core player proves his value, the organization doesn’t hesitate to secure him long-term.

Jahmyr Gibbs appears to be next in line.

The primary obstacle standing in Gibbs’ way is the league-wide reluctance to hand out massive contracts to running backs. That position has been devalued across the NFL in recent years, making big extensions far less common.

What works heavily in Gibbs’ favor, however, is his historic start to an already remarkable career. Few running backs—if any—have entered the league producing at his level.

At some point, Detroit will need to make a call, but based on how the franchise has operated recently, all signs point toward Gibbs earning a new deal.

According to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard, Gibbs has already accumulated 47 total touchdowns in just three seasons, matching Barry Sanders for the most scores by any player over that span to begin a career. Woodyard also noted that since the spring of 2024, the Lions have committed nearly $1 billion in contracts to nine different players, underscoring their willingness to invest in elite talent. While Gibbs remains on his rookie contract and has a fifth-year option available in 2027, he’s eligible to negotiate an extension this offseason.

With several games remaining, Gibbs is in position to surpass Sanders outright and claim sole ownership of that early-career touchdown record.

Gibbs brings rare versatility to Detroit’s offense, excelling as both a runner and a pass-catcher. His explosiveness, power, and adaptability make him the kind of centerpiece offensive coordinators dream of building around.

Although future salary-cap constraints could eventually become a concern, that reality shouldn’t deter the Lions from locking up Gibbs. His impact is undeniable, his value immense, and his talent special. Detroit has made a habit of retaining its top performers—and Gibbs unquestionably fits that mold.
