Lions may lose running backs coach Scottie Montgomery to NFC team.

“According to multiple sources, the Cowboys interviewed Detroit running backs coach Scottie Montgomery for their offensive coordinator opening,” Archer said. “Add him to list of Klayton Adams, Kevin Koger.”

But, the good news for the Lions is, it appears the Cowboys already have a favorite for the job. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams is the top candidate to land the Cowboys gig under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

“The Cowboys are interviewing (Arizona) Cardinals OL coach Klayton Adams for their offensive coordinator in person today at The Star, sources say,” Garafolo said. “The favorite to land the gig on Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching staff is in the building to meet with folks after interviewing virtually.”

Montgomery was once thought to be one of the top candidates for the Lions’ offensive coordinator vacancy after Johnson left for the Chicago Bears, but Montgomery was passed over for John Morton.

That was at least mildly surprising, as head coach Dan Campbell spoke very highly of Montgomery and even went as far as to say he should be a head-coach candidate.

Along with that group, passing-game coordinator Tanner Engstrand is expected to be hired as the Jets’ new offensive coordinator, per The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt. Detroit is reportedly replacing him with former Stanford head coach David Shaw.
