Lions Send Brutal Message to Ben Johnson After Reports of Him Disrespecting Detroit

During the NFL Scouting Combine, former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson made some remarks that didn’t sit well with his former team. His comments, which seemed to undermine the Lions while praising his new situation with the Chicago Bears, have drawn reactions from Detroit players.

Unsurprisingly, Johnson’s remarks did not go unnoticed by Lions players. Safety Kerby Joseph shared a reaction on social media, posting an image of Peter Griffin lurking—a meme often used to express skepticism or annoyance. Cornerback Amik Robertson also chimed in, reposting the image with the caption, “Yah feel me…”

Johnson’s Take on Caleb Williams

Speaking at the Combine on February 25, Johnson highlighted the strengths of his new quarterback, Caleb Williams, emphasizing his ability to make plays outside of structure. “Out of structure, the off-schedule, the creation… that’s what stands out the most because that’s really the way that this league is going right now,” he explained.

However, his next statement raised eyebrows. Johnson continued, “The pass rush is coming down, and to have an athlete like Caleb extend the play and potentially find an explosive down the field. That’s what gets me going a little bit. I get excited thinking about that because I haven’t been around that since I’ve been in the league.”

This remark caught the attention of Lions fans and players, as it appeared to downplay the abilities of Detroit’s current quarterback, Jared Goff. While Williams is known for his mobility, Goff has been a highly effective pocket passer, leading the Lions to an impressive season and setting several records.

Johnson’s Criticism of the Lions’ Defense

Johnson didn’t stop there. He also made comments about Detroit’s defense, pointing out how challenging it was for them to face quarterbacks who could extend plays outside the pocket.

“I’ve been on the other side, and I’ve experienced it,” Johnson stated. “It’s demoralizing when you’re on the other side and you’re watching that happen to your defense.”

Even though Detroit secured victories in both of their games against the Bears last season, Williams put up impressive numbers, throwing for 590 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions while also contributing on the ground.
