The Detroit Lions head into Week 3 sitting at 1-1, fresh off a resounding 52-21 victory over the Chicago Bears and former coordinator Ben Johnson. While the offense fired on all cylinders, questions remain on the defensive side of the ball.

One area in need of reinforcement is the defensive front. Injuries hampered the Lions’ depth there last season, and while starters Tyleik Williams and DJ Reader anchor the line, the rotation behind them doesn’t inspire much confidence. Adding another interior lineman could help fortify that group.

That’s where a potential trade with the Dallas Cowboys comes into play. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox recently identified Detroit as a logical landing spot for defensive tackle Mazi Smith.

“Smith was seen as a developmental prospect out of college and was never expected to contribute at a high level right away. At 6’3” and 337 pounds, he’s a former first-rounder with plenty of upside that may only be realized with a fresh start,” Knox explained.

Smith’s raw ability has never been in doubt, but he hasn’t quite matched expectations in Dallas. In two seasons spanning 34 appearances, he’s tallied 54 tackles and two sacks. He’s proven sturdy against the run but also brings some interior pass-rush ability.

Playing under Dan Campbell could be the type of environment that helps Smith flourish. If the trade cost is manageable, the Lions might find real value in pursuing him.

For now, it’s only speculation, but as the trade deadline approaches, Smith is a name Lions fans may want to monitor.
