Lions WR Jameson Williams Shares Key Update on Personal Growth

The Detroit Lions have transformed themselves into a serious Super Bowl threat after years of mediocrity and disappointment. A major reason for that turnaround is head coach Dan Campbell, who has cultivated a winning atmosphere and helped the team’s young talent develop. One of those rising stars is wide receiver Jameson Williams.

Williams had a quiet rookie year, appearing in just six games due to a recovery from a torn ACL and recording only a single catch. However, he began to show flashes of his potential last season and appears ready to take another step forward in 2025.

During the Lions’ recent preseason matchup against the Houston Texans, Williams shared what part of his game has seen the biggest improvement.

“I’d say mentally,” Williams said during the game broadcast. “Sometimes you’ve got to go through mental growth and then bring the physical side along too. I’ve been focusing a lot on keeping a clear head, staying calm, and having that ‘next play’ mindset,” he explained.

With former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson now the head coach of the Chicago Bears, Detroit has elevated John Morton to the OC role. Morton previously served as a senior offensive assistant for the Lions in 2022 and most recently held the position of passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos.

Williams’ journey to the NFL started slowly—he had limited playing time during his first two seasons at Ohio State. But after transferring to Alabama, he broke out in a big way, racking up 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns on 79 catches in a single season. That performance convinced Detroit to trade a first-, second-, and third-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in order to move up to the 12th spot in the 2022 draft and select him.

In 2024, Williams had a breakout year, hauling in 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and scoring seven touchdowns. He finished second on the team in receiving yards behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, and his 17.3 yards per catch ranked second in the NFL—highlighting his explosive playmaking ability. Williams has even claimed he can run the 40-yard dash in just 4.1 seconds, making him a nightmare matchup for defenders.

After years of struggles, Lions fans are now dreaming big—and with young stars like Williams stepping up, a Super Bowl win doesn’t feel out of reach anymore.
