As the SEC Baseball Tournament kicks off on Tuesday, anticipation is building for the NCAA Tournament selection, which is now just days away. Ahead of the action in Hoover, D1Baseball has released its latest projected field of 64—and it brings good news for LSU fans.
In this updated projection, LSU is listed as the No. 7 overall seed, placing them firmly within the top eight and earning the designation of a national seed. This is significant because the top eight national seeds are guaranteed the opportunity to host a Super Regional if they advance past the Regional round. With LSU currently in that elite group, the path to Omaha could run through Baton Rouge.
According to D1Baseball’s mock bracket, the Baton Rouge Regional would include Arizona, Miami, and Miami (Ohio). That lineup would provide an intriguing storyline, as LSU head coach Jay Johnson could potentially face his former team, the Arizona Wildcats. Johnson led Arizona to the College World Series before taking the reins at LSU.
In terms of bracket placement, LSU is paired with the Conway Regional, which is hosted by Coastal Carolina. This sets up the possibility of a Coastal Carolina vs. LSU Super Regional—a matchup that Tiger fans still remember with a sting, as CCU upset LSU in the 2016 Super Regional on their way to winning the national title.
LSU’s impressive season résumé may be enough to secure a top-eight seed regardless of the results in the SEC Tournament. However, the Tigers will have a valuable chance to strengthen their case on Friday night when they play in the tournament quarterfinals. Their opponent will be one of Mississippi State, Auburn, or Texas A&M, depending on early-round outcomes. A strong showing in Hoover could solidify LSU’s position and boost postseason confidence.
