Marc Guéhi is very displeased with Crystal Palace’s choice to cancel his £35m transfer to Liverpool, which happened after Oliver Glasner intervened, warning he would resign if Guéhi was sold, the Guardian has learned.
The chairman of Palace, Steve Parish, hesitantly agreed to Liverpool’s bid for the England defender just hours before Monday’s deadline, even though Glasner had maintained that the 25-year-old should not be sold due to the lack of time to secure a suitable replacement.
It is recognized that although Guéhi finished the initial part of his medical in anticipation of his transfer to Anfield – and a deal sheet was submitted before the 7pm deadline on Monday – Parish reversed his decision at the last moment after his manager, whose contract at Selhurst Park expires next summer, indicated he would resign if the transfer occurred.
Guéhi is thought to have been left extremely disheartened by the reversal, with the agreement so far progressed that Palace had already approved a goodbye video that has now been disclosed online and concludes with the phrase “Thank you Skip.” A private jet was also arranged to transport Guéhi to Merseyside that evening. There is no indication that he won’t play for Palace again, though one source familiar with Guéhi mentioned that he is contemplating whether to remain as captain.
In sharp contrast to Alexander Isak – who effectively staged a strike to ensure his transfer to Anfield – the ex-Chelsea player reportedly believes he handled the transfer rumors appropriately by remaining active for Palace. Other squad members are also thought to be unhappy that Guéhi’s transfer was blocked.
Liverpool might try to acquire Guéhi once more in the January transfer window, but he could also enter a pre-contract
agreement with a foreign club. It is thought that Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Juventus have shown interest
