Michigan State basketball supporters truly only want one thing (other than a national title): a top transfer center. The Spartans have just finished another good season, finishing 27-8 with a Sweet 16 spot, but they fell short of their objectives due to a lack of shooters on the roster.
The Spartans lacked the marksmen to truly contend, and Michigan State began ice-cold from the field when it mattered most. They were down 19 points in the first half against UConn before rallying to grab the lead in the second half. They ran out of steam, however, due to a lack of depth (Kaleb Glenn and Divine Ugochukwu injuries didn’t help) and a lack of consistent offense.
Now, the Spartans are going into the 2026-27 season with an estimated backcourt of around six players, and the only hole in the roster is the center position.
Michigan State needs any assistance it can find in the post, but the center position is the most important since Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper are departing, and they played the majority of those minutes. Jesse McCulloch and incoming freshman Ethan Taylor will not be ready in time.
That means Tom Izzo will have to invest some money in the portal. Many expect him to target Alabama center transfer Aiden Sherrell, however a recent update may alter things.
While this is only a report and no one has reported anything else on it, I have observed others state that Nate Oats is attempting to retain Sherrell. This is going to be a difficult recruitment for Izzo.
What does Michigan State do from here?
If Sherrell stays with Alabama, Michigan State will still have some options. The portal debuted a few days ago, and interesting names are appearing on the market every hour.
Izzo should keep an eye on young players who have exceptional shot-blocking skills, such as Cincinnati’s Moustapha Thiam or Arizona State’s Massamba Diop. Those are only a few names that have piqued my attention in recent days, and they may be inexpensive enough for Izzo to gamble on.
A step must be taken to guarantee that the squad that is one player short of being a genuine national title contender does not remain one player short.
