Analyzing Tackling Woes and Defensive Strategies for Improvement
In the wake of a tough 31-6 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals, the New York Jets are facing mounting questions about their defense, particularly around missed tackles and a lack of turnovers. Assistant coach Marquand Manuel, responsible for safeties, shared his insights on the team’s struggles and how they plan to turn things around.
Tackling Troubles
Manuel highlighted that the Jets’ tackling issues stem from execution rather than a lack of intent or effort. He emphasized, “When you get a guy down, that’s all that counts. But when you miss it, everybody is exploited.” During their loss to the Cardinals, the Jets missed 20 tackles, a number that tied them with the worst in the league for this season.
Turnover Troubles
While tackling remains an issue, the Jets’ inability to create turnovers has also been a point of concern. With just two interceptions through 10 games, Manuel pointed out that teams are now more focused on ball control, limiting chances for aggressive plays. “The shots they try to take are not as many as they need to anymore,” Manuel said. However, he stressed the importance of capitalizing on opportunities when they do arise.
Preparing for Anthony Richardson
Looking ahead to their next game against the Indianapolis Colts, Manuel is focused on quarterback Anthony Richardson, who will start after being benched in previous weeks. Manuel described Richardson as a “pure, true athlete” and acknowledged that the young quarterback, drafted as the fourth overall pick, has likely learned a great deal during his time on the bench. “We expect the best part of him now,” Manuel added, indicating the defense must be prepared for a more seasoned and dangerous Richardson.
The Jets are hoping to clean up their tackling and force more turnovers in their matchup against the Colts, while also maintaining their focus on Richardson’s athleticism.
