The Detroit Lions made a bold move Monday, cutting quarterback Hendon Hooker just a year after drafting him in the third round. NFL insider Jordan Schultz was first to report the news.

Hooker came into training camp as the favorite to back up Jared Goff, but he simply didn’t deliver when it mattered. Across four preseason games, the former Tennessee star went 22-of-40 for 187 yards, three interceptions, and two lost fumbles. His only scoring drive? A field goal after Detroit’s defense set him up deep in opponent territory.

Dan Campbell all but foreshadowed the decision after Hooker’s final outing, questioning whether the young QB had hit a developmental wall. “Sometimes does the player need a change of scenery?” Campbell said, while also pointing out the Lions’ need for roster depth at other positions.

Hooker now goes down as the first Day 2 draft pick of GM Brad Holmes’ tenure to be released—a notable mark for a front office that has largely hit on its early selections.

Meanwhile, veteran Kyle Allen all but locked down the backup role. Allen was sharp all preseason, completing 35-of-44 throws for 401 yards, five touchdowns, and two picks. The contrast between the two quarterbacks left the Lions with a clear choice.

Next up: Detroit must decide who fills out the quarterback room. A third-string option could still land on the practice squad, and if Hooker clears waivers, a return isn’t off the table.
