With the Detroit Lions likely seeking reinforcements on the offensive line this offseason, Mekhi Becton could be an ideal solution at guard. The 6-foot-7, 363-pound lineman brings both size and strength to the interior, making him a formidable presence in the trenches.
Last season, Becton played 903 snaps at right guard, allowing just two quarterback hits and three sacks—a testament to his ability to protect the passer. While his pass-blocking ability is solid, he truly excels in run blocking, a crucial trait for Detroit’s offensive scheme.
He played a major role in Saquon Barkley’s dominant 2024 season, helping pave the way for one of the league’s most effective rushing attacks. His performance earned him a 74.7 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF) and an overall grade of 75.2, indicating his well-rounded skill set.
The Lions’ offensive line has been one of the best in the NFL, but there are some uncertainties heading into free agency. Kevin Zeitler, Detroit’s current right guard, is set to hit the open market, and if he isn’t re-signed, the team will need a reliable replacement. Becton has proven he can handle the position at a high level and could step in seamlessly.
Another factor working in Becton’s favor is his youth. Despite being in the league since 2020, he will only be 25 years old at the start of the 2025 season, meaning he still has room to develop and improve. His massive frame and ability to dominate defenders at the line of scrimmage make him a strong candidate to be a long-term solution for Detroit’s offensive interior.
Additionally, playing alongside Pro Bowl-caliber linemen like Penei Sewell and Frank Ragnow could further elevate Becton’s game.
If Detroit wants to maintain its dominance in the trenches and continue supporting Jared Goff and the rushing attack, signing Becton would be a wise move.
