Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes have had a turbulent ride. In a two-year stretch, the program went from winning a national championship behind quarterback Will Howard to Julian Sayin adjusting in his first season, as well as being knocked out of the College Football Playoff by Miami.
There was one narrative developing in the backdrop that might have affected the Buckeyes’ depth chart heading into Spring Ball. Jeremiah Smith was very close to joining his former offensive coordinator Brian Hartline in South Florida. On this week’s The Triple Option podcast, the Bulls’ new coach revealed the specifics of what transpired.
According to Hartline, Smith wished to relocate to Tampa, but it was not in his best interests to depart. At least, that’s how Hartline recalls his encounter with the Biletnikoff Award contender.
(Smith) really desired to come, but I encouraged him to stay at Ohio State. According to Hartline, this is most likely the best option for them.
Not only did Smith trust Hartline as a coordinator, but the two built a strong personal relationship outside of football. There is little doubt that this is why Smith considered leaving Ohio State. If it had happened, it would have been huge for South Florida.
In his 2025 sophomore season at Ohio State, Smith had 87 receptions for 1,243 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns in 13 games. He also added a running score. He is widely regarded as one of the top offensive players, with an average of 95. 6 receiving yards per game.
Hartline understands what Smith would have given him in Tampa. But he’s eager to create some carbon duplicates in the next years.
