Phillies’ José Alvarado Returns from PED Suspension, Eyes Mid-August Comeback

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Left-handed reliever José Alvarado has rejoined the Philadelphia Phillies after serving an 80-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Alvarado was back with the team in Philadelphia ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. He is expected to start a rehab stint in the minor leagues shortly. While he’ll be eligible to return to the Phillies’ active roster on August 19, MLB rules prohibit players suspended for PEDs from participating in the postseason.

As of Tuesday, the Phillies were leading the NL East by 1.5 games over the New York Mets.

In an Instagram post, Alvarado expressed regret over the incident: “I understand that using banned substances is wrong, and I would never intentionally do so. I have deep respect for the sport, my team, and our fans. I sincerely apologize to all of them. I made a mistake and have accepted the punishment handed down by MLB. My focus now is on working hard and helping the team succeed.”

Alvarado’s suspension, which began on May 18, came after he tested positive for synthetic testosterone. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski explained the result was due to a weight-loss supplement Alvarado had taken during the offseason.

Since Alvarado’s absence, the Phillies have rotated several arms in the closer role.
