The Pittsburgh Steelers have brought back a familiar face by signing safety Terrell Edmunds from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad, as confirmed by a league source to TribLive on Monday.

Edmunds, who was originally drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, spent his initial five seasons in Pittsburgh as their starting strong safety.

During his time with the Steelers, Edmunds proved to be a consistent presence on the field, missing only three of the team’s 84 games, including playoffs, and starting in all but three of the 81 games he played.

Last season, Edmunds signed with the Philadelphia Eagles before being traded to the Tennessee Titans in October. In May, he joined the Jaguars, but after training camp, he did not make the final 53-man roster and was added to their practice squad.

Despite this, Edmunds was elevated to the active roster for Jacksonville’s season opener against the Miami Dolphins, where he participated in six defensive snaps during the game.

The Steelers currently have All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, experienced newcomer DeShon Elliott, and veteran Damontae Kazee as key members of their safety lineup. While Miles Killebrew is officially listed as a safety, he primarily contributes on special teams.

Jalen Elliott was the fifth safety on the season-opening roster but was inactive for the team’s recent win against the Atlanta Falcons. His release could potentially clear a roster spot for Edmunds’ return.

Edmunds, now 27, brings a wealth of experience with 96 NFL regular-season games under his belt. Throughout his career, he has recorded six interceptions, 28 passes defended, 7.5 sacks, and 458 tackles, including 310 solo tackles and 17 tackles for loss. Known for his strength as an in-the-box, run-stopping safety, Edmunds adds depth and experience to the Steelers’ defensive unit as he rejoins his former team.
