Polian, a former NFL executive known for his successful tenure with the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts, sees both risk and reward in the Lions' pursuit of Garrett

The Detroit Lions have faced challenges in finding a reliable edge rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, struggling in both the draft and free agency. This has led to speculation that the Lions might be one of the top contenders to acquire Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett, who is reportedly on the trade block and looking for a Super Bowl contender. However, a renowned NFL figure, Bill Polian, has shared a cautionary note regarding the potential impact of such a move.

Polian, a former NFL executive with vast experience, including overseeing four Super Bowl appearances with the Buffalo Bills and a Super Bowl victory with the Indianapolis Colts, acknowledged the risk involved in acquiring Garrett. According to Polian, landing Garrett would come at a steep cost, likely involving multiple first-round draft picks. He warned that for a team like the Lions, who have built a strong roster through successful draft picks, parting with significant future assets could be detrimental.

“Teams that excel at drafting are reluctant to part with their picks, as they can turn those selections into quality players,” Polian said. He also reminded the Lions that one player, even one as talented as Garrett, is unlikely to make the difference in a championship run. “You’re never one player away,” Polian cautioned.

Despite their impressive regular-season record of 15-2, the Lions were knocked out of the playoffs early, falling to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round. Their defense, particularly the pass rush, was inconsistent, especially after Hutchinson suffered a season-ending injury. This highlighted the Lions’ need for more edge-rushing help.

Whether or not the Lions pursue Garrett, upgrades to their pass rush are expected in the upcoming offseason. One potential option is Georgia’s Mykel Williams, who could be available with the 28th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Though Williams’ sack totals in college were modest, his physicality and athleticism could translate well to the NFL. As a younger prospect, he also has room to develop his skills. Some believe the Lions, with their strong developmental system, could be the ideal place for him to grow into a more impactful player.
