Troy-Henderson-—-Tennessee-Basketball

Another member of the Tennessee basketball team has placed his name in the transfer portal. Troy Henderson, who flashed as a rookie in Knoxville, will seek new chances in the portal. He joins fellow freshman guard Clarence Massamba in the portal, who made his decision this morning.

Henderson was a late discovery for Rick Barnes in last year’s cycle. Tennessee made Henderson his first and only big-time offer, which he eagerly accepted. According to 247Sports, the 6-1 point guard was a three-star recruit in the class, ranking 27th among point guards.

The Richmond, Virginia resident finished the year with an average of 1. 8 points and one assist per game. Henderson looked to have broken the rotation at one point, but a shoulder injury stopped his progress. His finest game of the season was against Texas A&M, when he played 22 minutes and scored eight points. Tennessee would not have won that game if he had not made two important three-pointers.

Henderson sustained a shoulder injury in the following game against Kentucky.

Tennessee seemed to have a promising, long-term perspective here, but he’ll look for fresh immediate chances instead. It’s yet another illustration of how hard it is to have a four-year player in today’s college basketball environment.

Tennessee already had major holes all over the squad, but now it’s safe to say they need upgrades practically everywhere. They’ll undoubtedly need a point guard to begin, since Ja’Kobi Gillespie is unavailable. They will now want a few guards for depth, as well as the challenge of totally rebuilding the frontcourt.

The transfer portal officially opens on Tuesday.
