Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is preparing for what could be his last NFL season, but his health remains uncertain heading into Week 1.
The Los Angeles Rams veteran has spent most of training camp sidelined with a lingering back problem. Though he recently returned to practice and looked sharp in limited action, Stafford dodged a direct answer when asked about being ready for the opener.
“I’m not going to answer questions like that,” Stafford told reporters, via the Los Angeles Times.
His vague reply has fueled speculation about whether the Rams may need to lean on backup Jimmy Garoppolo if Stafford isn’t cleared to play.
Stafford’s Status Still Unclear
Head coach Sean McVay initially labeled Stafford as “week-to-week” back in July. This week, the quarterback suggested his recovery is now being handled on a shorter timeline.
“It’s probably a day-to-day thing,” Stafford explained. “I’m just doing everything I can to make sure I’m available for the next practice.”
According to NFL.com’s Kevin Patra, the Rams have even brought in unconventional methods to aid his recovery, including the use of a “restorative and rejuvenation” mobile facility that Stafford has visited during camp.
Still, Stafford sounded more upbeat recently, saying his back feels stronger and he’s been able to do more than expected in practices.
“The good thing is I feel pretty good,” Stafford said. “The last couple days, I’ve been able to do more than I thought I would, and I’m just trying to keep building on that. Backs can be unpredictable, so it’s all about how I respond each day.”
Detroit’s Own QB Situation
Stafford’s move to Los Angeles in a blockbuster trade helped reshape the Lions’ future. In exchange, Detroit landed multiple draft picks and Jared Goff, who has since developed into the franchise’s cornerstone quarterback.
The current competition in Detroit lies further down the depth chart. Veteran Kyle Allen and young signal-caller Hendon Hooker are battling for the backup role behind Goff. Allen’s impressive preseason has given him the edge, putting pressure on the coaching staff to decide Hooker’s fate.
While some believe Detroit will keep three quarterbacks on the roster, others suggest Hooker could become trade material as the team finalizes its plans.
