The Detroit Lions may be closer to parting ways with veteran running back David Montgomery.

In a recent piece reporting on what was discovered during the 2026 NFL combine, insider Jeremy Fowler says that the veteran running back no longer wishes to remain in Motown.

As Fowler explains, And at running back, the Lions’ David Montgomery wants to leave, has a good contract (owed $6 million in 2026) and is 28 years old. That has worth. Indy is reporting that Detroit would want a reasonable Day 3 selection in exchange (possibly a fifth-rounder). Seattle makes sense here if it is unable to re-sign Kenneth Walker III.

The 28-year-old has witnessed his position reduced in Detroit’s attack, with Jahmyr Gibbs expected to be the primary focus of the team.

The ex-Chicago Bears running back has a salary-cap amount that, based on his output, may be prohibitive. Detroit can ill afford to overpay a running back in comparison to the production it will get.

The squad will need to find cash to pay its own free agents and players who are eligible for extensions.

Both Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes stated that they would like for Montgomery to return, but they realize that he may desire to leave in order to be used more frequently.

Holmes stated on The Rich Eisen Show that Gibbs is a crucial element of the attack and that contract negotiations for a big, long-term deal are slated to start soon.

Holmes stated that he met with Gibbs’ agent for initial discussions.

Montgomery has previously stated that he has a great desire to compete. The talented running back most likely decided to talk with his agents about his future after seeing his opportunities reduced.

That was the only thing I was accustomed to, Montgomery remarked of the Bears’ difficulties, according to NFL. com. And it reached a point where it ruined the game for me since I am competitive. I love to compete. That’s what football is all about. It’s wonderful to be somewhere where it’s valued.
