Deommodore Lenoir is set to remain with the San Francisco 49ers for the long term, having signed a five-year, $92 million contract extension. The cornerback was in the final year of his rookie contract and was about to become a free agent after the season, but the new deal ensures his continued presence with the team.
Lenoir, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has quickly exceeded expectations early in his career. In his second season, he set career highs with 84 tackles, three interceptions, and 10 passes defended. These impressive numbers helped establish him as a key player in the 49ers’ defense.
This season, Lenoir has continued his strong play, recording 53 tackles, two interceptions, and six passes defended so far. He is tied with linebacker Fred Warner for the most interceptions and passes defended on the team and has the second-highest tackle total among the 49ers’ defenders.
Known for his versatility, Lenoir has been used both as an outside cornerback and in the slot. While the majority of his snaps have come on the outside, this flexibility provides San Francisco with options in case they need him to line up elsewhere in the defensive backfield.
With Lenoir now signed to a long-term deal, the 49ers are looking to recover from a challenging start to the season. After beginning the year 3-4, they have managed to win their last two games, putting them back over .500 and keeping them in playoff contention.
The 49ers also received a boost recently with the return of star running back Christian McCaffrey. While McCaffrey’s debut was modest with just 39 rushing yards in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it’s expected that he will soon return to peak form. San Francisco is now preparing for their upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks as they aim for a third consecutive victory.
