Optimism resurfaced when BYU achieved 12 victories for the first time since 2001. The Cougars’ resurgence was led by head coach Kalani Sitake and an unexpected starter. Bear Bachmeier, a true freshman, earned the starting quarterback position after a solid camp performance. The head coach spoke about his ideas for his sophomore quarterback.

BYU HC Kalani Sitake challenges QB Bear Bachmeier to the top.

BYU lost its starting quarterback last offseason when Jake Retzlaff departed the program due to an honor code violation. Bachmeier, a genuine freshman, battled for and won the starting position as preseason camp approached.

In his rookie season, Bachmeier guided BYU to double-digit victories, a Big 12 championship game appearance, and a bowl triumph in 14 games. The coach expects more from his quarterback as he begins his second season. Sitake discussed Bachmeier’s future with Ben Griddle of 103. 9 ESPN The Fan (Salt Lake City).

“Developing that connection (with his receivers). He’s also working with the tight ends. It’s great to see Bear understand the offense now and know that we can push him to the limit of his learning ability. “

Last season, Bachmeier completed 64. 9% of his passes for 3,033 yards, 15 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also contributed 527 running yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. The sophomore was ranked 30th on the PFSN CFB QB Impact Rankings. While Sitake did not directly address which problems exist in the offense, it is obvious that he anticipates more progress from Bachmeier as the team prepares for its next group of obstacles.

Furthermore, roster changes may influence how the BYU starter leads the offense next season. First, the team’s top receiver, Chase Roberts, graduated last year. Roberts’ 14. 9 yards per reception and six touchdowns provided Bachmeier with the benefit of a six-foot-four vertical weapon capable of extending opponents.

Furthermore, tight end Carsen Ryan, who was prized for his pass-catching skills and effective blocking, departed after the previous season.

As a result of these exits, BYU enters the upcoming season with a combination of new players and veteran carryovers. Parker Kingston, the team’s leading returning receiver, is a slot wideout who performs well underneath and has adequate speed to go beyond the chains. Jojo Phillips is a flexible receiver on the outside who could work well with Kingston.

Perhaps Bachmeier’s two greatest strengths have mostly returned. The offensive line, with the exception of graduating left tackle Isaiah Jatta, returns 80% of its starters. Linemen must be both swift and strong when playing in the wide zone spread.

Furthermore, the run game continues to be an important component of Sitake’s attack. In this light, LJ Martin’s comeback should relieve pressure on the passing game. Martin led the Big 12 in rushing yards (1,305), averaging 5. 5 yards per attempt and remaining consistent as the club changed in other areas.

BYU’s schedule begins with a money game against Utah Tech in the first week, followed by tough contests. The Cougars will play three conference games between September 12 and October 10: Arizona, TCU, and Iowa State. Later in the year, the squad will face Notre Dame before resuming hostilities with archrival Utah on November 7.

Bachmeier was an unforeseen menace to opponents last season. Now, with past success and a greater knowledge of the offense, he enters the season as a recognizable player. The question is how he will alter his game to remain ahead of defenses.
