Stafford’s Recovery Looks Good… Or Is It Smoke and Mirrors?

Matthew Stafford, the longtime Detroit Lions quarterback now with the Los Angeles Rams, is showing promising signs of improvement as he approaches what could be the final chapter of his NFL career.

The veteran signal-caller has been sidelined throughout training camp due to a lingering back issue. Initially listed as “week-to-week,” Stafford’s timeline seemed uncertain, but Rams head coach Sean McVay recently offered a more optimistic outlook, hinting at a possible return before Week 1.

Back in Action After Months Away

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Stafford returned to the field over the weekend for the first time in months. McVay revealed that the quarterback unleashed 68 passes during Saturday’s session, demonstrating full throwing range without restrictions.

“We’re looking forward to getting him involved in practice on Monday,” McVay told reporters, signaling a step forward in the 37-year-old’s recovery.

Earlier this summer, McVay had been less definitive about Stafford’s status, stressing that his progress would be evaluated weekly. While ruling him out of joint practices with the Cowboys, McVay noted that Stafford had visited renowned back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins and received encouraging feedback.

“The Cowboys, no,” McVay said. “With the Chargers, we’ll see. I just don’t want to commit to a timeline.”

With the season opener against the Houston Texans set for September 7, there’s still room for Stafford to ramp up before meaningful snaps.

Career Since the Lions-Rams Trade

Stafford’s move to Los Angeles in 2021 paid immediate dividends, culminating in a Super Bowl victory during his first year with the franchise. The Lions, in turn, benefited from acquiring Jared Goff, who has since emerged as one of the NFL’s most consistent quarterbacks.

Although Stafford signed a two-year extension earlier this year, the Rams have been clear that his status will be reassessed annually. CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan has speculated that the 2025 campaign could be his swan song, as the veteran weighs retirement after his age-37 season.

While Stafford’s future is undecided, the Lions are banking on Goff to push them toward their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
