The Aggies are expected to be in the double digits for the number of players they have picked, so Texas A&M football is almost certain to have an outstanding draft class this year. The fact that the Aggies are the top team in the country in terms of NFL Combine invites is a good indicator of this concept and evidence of Mike Elko’s growth.
There are all sorts of participants at those Combine invites, including former top-100 players and former zero-star recruits. In the middle is a man whose departure from Taurean York shocked a large number of Aggie supporters.
Despite being a low three-star prospect when he graduated from high school, York had a respectable amount of interest from local schools because of his outstanding performance and numerous accolades during his pre-college career. Although his measurable prevented him from ranking any higher, he entered Texas A&M prepared to work and eventually became a day-one starter. The hope, which some NFL draft gurus are now seeing, is that he can replicate this at the next level.
The Aggies’ greatest NFL Draft sleeper, Taurean York, was given that title.
David Pollack questioned Matt Miller about the Aggies’ biggest sleeper during an interview, and Miller had a rather obvious response:
York is projected to be selected on day three, but Miller believes that he will test well and make a good impression on several clubs in Indianapolis, which might raise his draft status. It would be a major indicator of the progress Elko has made, as Miller also mentioned.
Matt Miller’s statement on the change that the Mike Elko administration has brought to Texas A&M football is as follows:
We looked at A&M four years ago, and they had excellent recruiting classes, but the players never made it to the end. Mike Elko is guiding them there.
Coming into the Elko era, that was the expectation, and he has lived up to it perfectly. Due to the modifications the head coach has made in and around the program, the Aggies have transformed their reputation in just two short years into a program that will produce high-level NFL talent year after year. If Miller is correct, York will prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt at the Combine, making him the ideal illustration of it.
