In the NIL era, Texas Tech football has been flourishing. They have lured in several notable prospects and players from the transfer portal, giving them a commanding position in the recruiting market. With the way they are recruiting, they could finish it sooner than later, particularly under head coach Joey McGuire, even if they are now constructing something that will take longer to complete.

The Red Raiders’ commitment to college football recruiting is demonstrated by Texas Tech’s most recent pickup. Jhadyn Nelson, a linebacker in the class of 2027, committed to Texas Tech because it was the first institution to make him an offer that he couldn’t refuse, according to Pete Nakos of On3.

For a high school linebacker, that agreement was undoubtedly huge. Texas Tech is anticipated to pay Nelson $375,000 in the first year, according to On3. For the best prospects, the linebacker market seems to be at about $650,000, which is comparable to the transaction.

Notably, Nelson received significant offers from institutions all around the United States. Among others, Texas, Houston, Miami, SMU, TCU, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Texas all gave Nelson offers. As he had no offers going into 2026, his recruitment began to gain momentum in recent months. Nelson received his first offer from Texas Tech on January 20, and the avalanche began from there.

Nelson recorded 71 tackles, 2. 5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, an interception, three forced fumbles, and three pass breakups during his junior year at Houston’s Langham Creek High School. On April 11, the four-star prospect is expected to visit Texas Tech for spring training. Nelson may be precisely what they need to overcome the obstacle.

“The coaches in this program are fantastic. They are wonderful coaches as well as wonderful people,” Nelson told On3. “Coach [James] Blanch[chard], coach [Joey] McGuire, coach [Brian] Nance, coach [Shiel] Wood. ” I enjoy surrounding myself with wonderful people, and they are all wonderful folks. I’m going to be in a position to make plays because Shiel Wood is my position coach as well as the defensive coordinator.

They sent me a video of Ccach McGuire training with the squad, and I’ve read anecdotes about him. I want to be involved in that.
