The Detroit Lions face a tough decision regarding one of their key internal free agents, defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike, as they aim to improve their defense for 2025. While the Lions’ defense showed resilience despite numerous injuries in 2024, those injuries ultimately hindered their playoff run. As they enter the offseason, a primary focus will be improving their defense, which includes potentially re-signing some of their own free agents.

Onwuzurike, who played in all 16 games this season, has quietly been effective, posting 28 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. He recorded 45 quarterback pressures during the regular season and earned a top-25 overall PFF grade among defensive tackles. His presence is especially crucial with the uncertainty surrounding Alim McNeill’s recovery from a torn ACL, making Onwuzurike an essential piece for Detroit’s defensive line depth. Pro Football Focus analyst Dalton Wasserman highlighted Onwuzurike as the Lions’ most important free agent to retain.
