The Detroit Lions kicked off their offseason early by securing an important defensive player. The team has reached a three-year, $25.5 million extension with linebacker Derrick Barnes, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. The deal includes $16 million fully guaranteed at the time of signing.

Barnes was sidelined for much of the 2024 regular season due to a torn PCL and MCL, which he sustained in Week 3 against the Cardinals. Despite this, he remains a key player in Detroit’s defense, often filling a versatile role as both an edge rusher and an off-ball linebacker. The Lions’ defense frequently employs a base formation during first and second downs, making Barnes a vital asset.
