Netflix is set to release a compelling new documentary, Titan: The OceanGate Disaster, on June 11, 2025, offering an in-depth exploration of the tragic 2023 implosion of the Titan submersible during its expedition to the Titanic wreck site. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Mark Monroe, the documentary delves into the events leading up to the catastrophe, shedding light on the decisions and oversights that culminated in the loss of five lives.

The Titan submersible, operated by OceanGate, was on a deep-sea dive to explore the iconic Titanic wreck when it suffered a catastrophic implosion, resulting in the deaths of all five individuals onboard. Those lost in the tragedy include OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, renowned Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his son, Suleman Dawood. Despite previous successful missions, serious safety concerns had been raised about the Titan’s design and engineering. Critics argue that warning signs were ignored, sparking ongoing discussions about accountability and risk in extreme exploration.

The documentary features exclusive interviews with former OceanGate employees and experts in deep-sea technology. Among them is David Lochridge, the company’s former director of marine operations, who was dismissed after voicing serious concerns about the submersible’s safety standards. Through powerful whistleblower accounts, never-before-seen footage, and detailed technical analysis, the film provides a sobering look into what went wrong and why the disaster may have been preventable.

Director Mark Monroe stated, “The more I dug into this terrible tragedy, the more intrigued I became about how this could have ever happened in the first place, and who exactly was the man who built and then went down with this ship.” The film promises to be not only an emotional journey but also a wake-up call about the need for stricter regulations and transparency in privately operated exploratory missions.

Premiering at the Tribeca Festival on June 6 before its global Netflix release on June 11, Titan: The OceanGate Disaster is expected to spark renewed dialogue around safety, ambition, and the human cost of pushing technological boundaries. For audiences fascinated by maritime exploration, ethics in engineering, and the psychology of risk-taking, this documentary is a must-watch.
