The Detroit Lions are facing an important offseason decision regarding their offensive line, as they aim to maintain a high level of performance with two top-tier running backs and a quarterback who requires strong protection to thrive. A key figure in this scenario is veteran Kevin Zeitler, who signed a one-year deal last season and played exceptionally well, notably posting a career-best 87.2 run blocking grade from Pro Football Focus. However, with Zeitler’s contract expiring and his age-35 season approaching, it remains uncertain whether he will return to Detroit. This uncertainty has led the Lions to explore potential replacements for the right guard position.

One notable free-agent option is Trey Smith, a standout guard for the Kansas City Chiefs. Smith, who ranks highly on Bleacher Report’s list of free agents, is known for his durability, having missed just one start in his four-year career. He also boasts impressive performance, particularly in pass protection, as he didn’t allow a sack in 2024. His agility and efficiency in the run game further solidify his status as a top target. With his combination of strength in both pass protection and run blocking, Smith could potentially command the highest salary for a guard in the NFL, a distinction currently held by Landon Dickerson at $21 million per year.
