PROVO, Utah – The Bear Bachmeier era is rolling as the true freshman powers his BYU Cougars to a 2-0 record, with his rushing ability stealing the spotlight.
Bachmeier started the year by scoring twice on the ground in one half against Portland State. A week later, a quarterback keeper through the middle gave BYU its first points against Stanford.

Heading into the bye week, Bachmeier is one touchdown away from matching Taysom Hill’s BYU freshman QB record of four rushing scores.
The younger brother of Cougar receiver Tiger Bachmeier has been trusted as a runner since his opening snap. He’s totaled 58 yards on 17 attempts, and his three rushing touchdowns tie him with six other quarterbacks for the national lead. He’s the only freshman in that group.
Only LJ Martin has more attempts at 26.
When he’s not running, Bachmeier has proven himself as a solid passer.
He’s connected on 63.2 percent (24-of-38) for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Against Stanford, he posted career highs in completions (17), attempts (27), and yards (175).

It took a short while for Bear Bachmeier to settle into his college debut. Once he did, BYU’s offense erupted in a first-half clinic.
Bachmeier displayed arm talent while going 7-of-11 for 97 yards and three scores. He also showcased the rushing skill that makes him tough to defend, even as a newcomer.

That effort earned him his first weekly award after being selected Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
The Murrieta, California native became the first true freshman in BYU history responsible for five touchdowns in one game.
Bachmeier matched Zach Wilson as the only Cougar freshmen to throw three touchdown passes. He also joined Wilson, Taysom Hill, and Tanner Mangum as the only true freshmen to toss multiple TDs in their first start.
