Days before the NFL season kicks off, a fresh update on the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott’s contract negotiations suggests that the two may eventually call it quits.

The Cowboys’ 2024 NFL season is about to kick off in a few days. This year, the team is expected to perform well once more. However, there is a gloomy cloud over their chances of competing this season and in the future.

Dallas and standout quarterback Dak Prescott have been in talks about a possible contract extension during the winter and summer. The three-time Pro Bowler is in the last year of his current deal, and allowing him to become a free agent at the end of the season would be a major risk for the club.

However, whenever there is positive news, it appears like a bad report is fast to follow. The length of a contract is the main obstacle to a deal between the two parties, according to fresh intelligence that surfaced earlier this week.

Ahead of Week 1, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler provided an update on the situation on Thursday. Furthermore, it appears that something a Cowboys official told him lately startled him.

4,516 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, and 105.9 passer rating are among Dak Prescott’s achievements for 2024.

There are further indications that Dak Prescott will become a free agent following the 2024 Dallas Cowboys season.

The Cowboys have stated both openly and privately that they wish to extend the quarterback and that they have every intention of doing so, which makes the Prescott negotiations confusing. Additionally, they have a track record of paying their stars—even when those stars raise the cost.

However, a statement made midweek by someone who is directly aware of the circumstances that “looks like free agency at this point” makes me think twice. Dallas now has four days to step up talks, but so far nothing has happened to the extent that such an agreement requires.

Dallas “will have to come around on” a four-year contract that would make Dak Prescott the highest-paid quarterback in the league, according to Fowler. Prescott’s fearlessness in testing the open market, however, makes the entire scenario appear convoluted. Furthermore, the Las Vegas Raiders have been mentioned frequently as one of his top suitors.
