A major talking point for the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason was how the running my 6back situation would unfold when the season began.
In their 33-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns, Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle shared responsibilities as expected.
Elliott accumulated 40 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, while Dowdle added 26 yards on eight carries. Given that Dallas led 27-3 at one point, the game plan shifted, and the Cowboys relaxed in the second half.
Elliott, however, was pleased with the arrangement.
“I think it went really well,” Elliott remarked. “It might’ve gotten tough in the second half when we couldn’t get much going. I think I was only on the field for two or three plays in the third quarter, but that’s just how the game unfolded. If we handle things on offense and sustain drives, it will help keep both me and Rico in rhythm.”
Similar to 2022, when Elliott shared duties with Tony Pollard, the Cowboys will rely on multiple running backs in 2024, potentially including Dalvin Cook.
In the first half against the Browns, Dallas balanced its offensive attack effectively. Though it’s just one game, Elliott and Dowdle, at their freshest, showed encouraging signs.
Elliott’s hurdle on the opening play hinted at his readiness, while Dowdle displayed quickness on a few of his runs.
It’s still early, and one game isn’t enough to draw conclusions, but the Cowboys’ run game showed promise. Now, they’ll look to continue that momentum against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
