A shooting at an Eastern Market tailgate resulted in one fatality and another person in critical condition.

What was meant to be a lively discussion among fans about the Detroit Lions’ loss turned tragic at a Sunday afternoon tailgate at Eastern Market.

According to the Detroit News, “A dispute led to gunfire, resulting in one man’s death, another in critical condition, and a suspect in custody.”

The incident unfolded at 4:30 p.m. at Shed 6 on Riopelle Street, shortly after the Lions’ first defeat of the season at Ford Field.

“A major brawl broke out but dispersed after a few minutes, only to reassemble a few feet away from the initial confrontation. The two combatants appeared ready to fight again,” reported Detroit police chief James White. “One participant, a man from Oak Park, drew a gun and fired at least twice, hitting two individuals.”

Chief White noted the dangerous combination of tailgating, drinking, and firearms is likely to lead to trouble, highlighting the increasing tendency for people to use guns during altercations.

“Tailgating, drinking, and guns are a bad mix,” White remarked. “It’s absurd. If people want to fight, they should do it without guns. Now, we have two people shot, one dead, and another facing serious charges, likely murder.”

Social media quickly spread videos and photos of the scene, with many fans reported to be nearby.

“We encounter aggression at various events,” White said. “Everyone feels the need to carry a gun. Guns are unnecessary at a tailgate. The focus should have been on the Lions’ loss and the ensuing fight, not on violence.”
