The Detroit Lions are being encouraged to acquire a San Francisco 49ers player who has competed in two Super Bowls, winning one.
The Lions are seen as strong contenders for this season’s Super Bowl, but they can still enhance their roster by adding key talent.
In a November 18 feature on addressing teams’ biggest weaknesses before Week 12, Matt Holder of Bleacher Report suggests the Lions target a specific 49ers player with Super Bowl experience to strengthen their squad.
Lions Could Benefit from 49ers’ ‘Elite Starter’
Holder argues the Lions should pursue 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward in 2025 free agency. He highlights cornerback as Detroit’s top priority, followed by edge rusher, offensive line depth, wide receiver depth, and left guard.
“The Lions addressed cornerback heavily this offseason, trading for Carlton Davis and drafting Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. early. Yet, secondary play remains one of Detroit’s few weaknesses in 2024,” Holder noted. “With Davis set to hit free agency, the Lions should evaluate cornerback options in the market.”
Holder continued, “Signing Charvarius Ward, a high-level starter with Super Bowl experience from his time with the 49ers and Chiefs, would be ideal for any contender.”
Additionally, Holder recommends drafting Ohio State EDGE JT Tuimoloau in 2025, describing him as “a great addition to Detroit’s pass rush, fitting perfectly with their aggressive run defense.”
The Detroit Lions Are Thriving
Beyond roster improvements, Holder commends the Lions for their performance.
“Are the Lions the NFL’s best team right now? Maybe so,” he stated. “The defense has room for growth, but with an offense delivering like it did in Sunday’s 52-6 win over the Jaguars, it’s less of a concern.”
Holder suggests there’s little need for drastic changes.
“Could the Lions seek veteran depth before the playoffs? Possibly, but there’s no pressing reason to make major moves,” he wrote.
“The Lions consistently find ways to win, even when not perfect. Their trade for Za’Darius Smith addressed a key need after Aidan Hutchinson’s season-ending injury. Smith is a significant upgrade over midseason options,” Holder added.
He also noted, “With $62.1 million in projected 2025 cap space, the Lions are well-positioned to build an even stronger team in the offseason.”
