San Francisco 49ers’ left tackle Trent Williams faces the Cleveland Browns.
The San Francisco 49ers have officially ended Trent Williams’ season.
During a Monday media call, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Williams will miss the team’s last two games, concluding his 2024 season.
The eleven-time Pro Bowler has been managing ankle and heel injuries since the team’s November 10th win over the Buccaneers. He played the following week but was ruled out for Week 12 against the Packers. After the game, he was seen using a knee scooter.
Williams has also been dealing with personal tragedy off the field.
On November 24th, his wife, Sondra Williams, revealed on Instagram that their son, Trenton O’Brien Williams Jr., was stillborn at 35 weeks.
Williams has not returned to the team since his son’s passing.
In his absence, the 49ers have allowed 54 pressures, according to Pro Football Focus, and missed the playoffs. The team is 1-4 without Williams this season.
The 49ers continue to experience offensive line injuries.
Replacing Trent Williams
The 49ers announced Jaylon Moore will miss the last two games after injuring his quad against the Dolphins.
Moore, filling in for Williams, was having his best season. He earned a 73 pass-blocking grade and allowed just ten pressures. His performance softened the impact of Williams’ absence.
In five games, Moore recorded the third-best pass-blocking grade among 49ers linemen with over six games played. His ten pressures were the fewest among 49ers linemen starting five or more games.
Spencer Burford replaced Moore against Miami, performing well despite limited left tackle experience. Burford allowed two pressures and received an above-average pass-blocking grade, according to Pro Football Focus.
However, Burford’s availability for Week 17 is uncertain due to a calf injury. Shanahan said the team awaits MRI results before deciding his status.
If Burford cannot play, the 49ers will turn to Austen Pleasants or explore free-agent options.
Pleasants has not started an NFL game.
The team may re-sign Sebastian Gutierrez, who was recently waived. Gutierrez has appeared in one game for the 49ers since 2023 and, like Pleasants, has never started.
Other Injury Updates
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is also dealing with a calf injury and awaits MRI results. He played four snaps against the Dolphins before exiting. Shanahan did not rule out shutting him down for the season.
