The Detroit Lions have a clear path to improving their roster if they hope to contend for a Super Bowl in 2025. With the departures of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, the team faces significant challenges. However, the foundation remains strong, keeping them in the mix as a top contender.

One of the most glaring issues for Detroit last season was its defense, particularly in the secondary. Injuries exposed the unit’s shortcomings, and the struggles were evident when Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders shredded them in the playoffs. With Glenn no longer in charge, head coach Dan Campbell must prioritize strengthening the defense to avoid a repeat performance.

A promising young cornerback from the AFC appears to be available, and if Detroit pursues him, it could provide a much-needed solution to one of its biggest defensive flaws.

Lions Could Acquire Browns CB Greg Newsome in Potential Deal

Secondary depth was a major problem for the Lions in 2024. The team ranked 25th in opponent yards per pass attempt (6.9), highlighting the urgency to reinforce its defensive backfield.

Greg Newsome endured a challenging 2024 season, ranking 177th out of 223 qualified cornerbacks per Pro Football Focus. Despite his struggles, his early years with the Cleveland Browns demonstrated his potential, suggesting that a change of scenery could help him regain his form.

Although Newsome allowed a 112.5 passer rating when targeted last season, his previous career-worst was a much lower 85.6. In 2023, he held opposing quarterbacks to a 56.7% completion rate and a 74.8 passer rating. If the Lions can help him return to that level, acquiring him could be a win for both teams.

Cleveland appears unlikely to commit to a long-term extension for Newsome, making him a potential trade piece. With the Browns shifting toward a rebuild, they might be willing to part with him in exchange for valuable draft assets.

Bleacher Report highlighted Detroit’s need for a player like Newsome, particularly with 2024 starter Carlton Davis set to enter free agency. Injuries certainly factored into the Lions’ struggles, but finishing 30th in passing yards allowed underscored the urgency for reinforcements.

This hypothetical trade offers benefits for both sides, but whether Detroit sees Newsome as a true solution remains uncertain. Regardless, the organization owes it to its fans to explore every avenue for improvement.
